I’m excited to announce that Abundant Land is complete and nearing distribution. Check out the new poster below.
We are working hard to form partnerships, create buzz around the film and intend to release it online in June. June will be an important month in Hawaii because the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reviews a district court decision that invalidated the temporary GMO moratorium Maui and Molokai’s voters passed in November 2014.
The stakes are high. As the opening brief to the Ninth Circuit states:
Maui County [which includes Molokai] is “ground zero” for the testing and development of GE crops. The testing and development of these crops require unprecedented chemical spraying and a highly destructive use of the land as compared to other commercial agricultural activities. These practices have been linked to serious environmental and public health problems, including environmental pollution, pesticide runoff and drift, transgenic contamination, and the creation of “superweeds” that are resistant to high levels of pesticides.
The frustration surrounding biotech’s practices and lack of transparency has been brewing for years in Hawaii. Oral arguments over the temporary moratorium in front of the Court of Appeals are set for June 15. If the Court of Appeals honors the democratically approved initiative, Molokai and Maui have a real opportunity to transition away from genetically modified industrial agriculture to an ecological and sustainable farming system. We hope this film will help that transition.
